Ophelia

Ophelia is a very complex character.  She loves a man who loves her back and can not be with her.  Although Shakespear hnts that Hamlet and her had snuck around and did things with her she doesn't seem to be able to handle it.  She seems very unstable, so the death of her father being killed by the man she loves, may have been the reason she went crazy.  Some believe that she loved Hamlet so much that seeing him go "mad" she too went mad.  I do feel sorry for her because Hamlet is able to "pretend" while she just goes insane, everyone treats her like a mental paitent while Hamlet is allowed to roam freely.  If I were to direct the play I'm not exactly sure how i would interpret Ophelia.  She is such a complex character there is no right way of interpreting her.

I agree with Linzee. Ophelia is a very complex character and is very difficult to be understood. THroughout the play it is unsure whether she loves Hamlet too much or doesnt love him at all. Hamlet going mad did have an effect on Ophelia and I believe that could be part of the reason why she went insane in addition to her father Polonius' death.

I agree with Linzee beacuse eveything she is say is right. The reason why I think she killed herself was beacuse she got all caught up into all the stuff that was running though her mind and thats why she killed herself.

Linzee, I do agree with your point that Hamlet and Ophelia receive very different treatment in the play, both by the characters as well as the playwright. I mean, give the girl some lines! I look forward to seeing how you do interpret her in your own film versions.

BTW, have you had a chance to update any of the earlier posts?
